Celebrate You and the Library

National Library Week is next week, April 8-14th. Since 1958, National Library Week has been sponsored each April by the American Library Association and recognized by libraries throughout the country, including your own Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Public Library. National Library Week is designated as a time to highlight the value of libraries, librarians and library workers, and to celebrate the library as the heart of the community and a place for camaraderie, knowledge and entertainment. The Library offers programs for all ages, stays up-to-date with technological advances, and provides reliable resources for studies from kindergarten through your doctoral degree. We have fun, too, with Wii gaming, film discussions, and story times. We bring in knowledgeable speakers to give you the inside scoop on gardening and traditions of other cultures. We sing songs, are masters of Duct Tape, learn about life a long time ago, discuss books over coffee, and boost computer skills.

The Library will loan you up to five ebooks at a time, offers you a way to learn new languages, and keeps your speakers spilling music. We have audiobooks, the latest films and classics on DVD and Blu-Ray, and, of course, books. Whatever type of book you prefer -audio, electronic, or printed- we’ve got it. We’re part of Evergreen Indiana, a consortium of over one-hundred public, school and institutional libraries in Indiana, and you can use your Evergreen Indiana library card to access over 6.6 million items. Library materials and programs are available to you at no cost and we work hard behind the scenes to keep it that way. We want our Library to be one of the best around, so we write grants, plan activities down to the tiniest detail, build the collection, and keep thousands of items physically moving every day from our shelves to your hands to the return boxes and back again.

Our favorite way to celebrate National Library Week is to celebrate you, and we’re doing that by giving away three gift baskets. There will be a youth gift basket, a teen gift basket and an adult gift basket displayed in each department and you may enter your name once a day at the Youth Services reference desk or the Teen and Adult Services reference desk when you visit between April 8th and 14th. Winners will be notified on Monday, April 16th. Come in and help us celebrate you and the Library during National Library Week, and make it a habit.
