People who plan or lead activities for seniors will be pleased to learn about an exciting, new resource at the Library—BiFolkal DVD sets. These multimedia kits are designed to spark memories and encourage conversation among older adults. In addition to a scripted slide show, capturing a specific time and place in history, each kit contains related stories, poems, and discussion questions. Most include an audio CD and a songbook with music and lyrics. Six sets, representing a variety of interests, are currently available:
- Stars on the Home Front
- The Fifties Family Style
- Morning Chores
- In Agony and Ecstasy: Reflections on Fashion
- Food
- You Oughta Have an Auto

Meet the OWLS (Older, Wiser, Livelier Seniors) from the Garden Homes at Zionsville Meadows. These enthusiastic readers meet once a month to talk about books. In honor of Veterans Day, the OWLs read and discussed Fannie Flagg’s bestselling novel, The All-Girl Filling Station’s Last Reunion, a terrific story that brings to life some unsung heroines of WWII, the Women Airforce Service Pilots. They also celebrated the launch of the Library’s new Crackerjack Book program, which enables senior book groups to check out multiple copies of large print books to use in their discussions. At the end of the hour, the OWLS presented the Library with a copy of the DVD American Experience: Fly Girls for other seniors to enjoy!
Each Crackerjack Book box contains 8 large print copies, an audio copy, and a discussion guide for a popular book. Crackerjack borrowers may also request a Kindle Paperwhite preloaded with the book. Thanks to a generous grant from the Library Foundation, nine different Crackerjack Book sets are available for checkout to local assisted living facilities and their residents. SOAR (Seniors Out and About Reading) is a group of congenial, seasoned readers that convenes every three weeks at the Library. No advanced reading or registration is required, simply join tag-team librarians, Ellen and Barbara, on the second floor, as we talk about books we’ve handpicked to tickle your reading fancies. Typically, we zip through about 10 to 15 books, both fiction and nonfiction (the majority of which are available in Large Print), giving thumbnail sketches, relevant reviews, and personal opinions. Next we open the floor for you to tell us about any good books you’ve read lately. Lastly, we’re on hand to assist with specific research requests or track down elusive titles. If you want to find a good book, expand your reading horizons, or just kick back and enjoy an hour in the company of like-minded readers join us for SOAR.
