One Mom's Quest for Perfection

Planning to take the SAT test this year? If so, you might start by reading The Perfect Score Project: Uncovering the Secrets of the SAT by Debbie Stier, a forty-eight-year-old mother of two. Stier started sampling SAT prep books and courses to encourage her high-school-age son to study for the exam.  Before she knew it, Stier’s simple motivational exercise had mushroomed into a grueling quest to achieve a perfect score on all three (critical reading, math, and writing) sections of the SAT. Stier took the exam every time it was offered in 2011 for a total of 7 times. Mixing anecdotes with test-taking tips, The Perfect Score Project offers practical advice to test takers of all ages.  For an entertaining review of this book by another unlikely SAT candidate read Elizabeth Kolbert’s "Big Score: When Mom Takes the SATs" in The New Yorker.

The Library offers a wide selection of instructional resources and test prep books.  Moreover, Library cardholders can access, free of charge, INSPIRE's Testing and Education Resource Center, an excellent source of ebooks, academic question banks, and practice tests.

Garden to Table

It’s that wonderful time of the year to wander the farmer’s markets in Zionsville and Trader’s Point Creamery, visit local stands and begin harvesting the vegetables and herbs from your own garden.  Beyond fresh salads, what to do with all the zucchini and tomatoes that come on at once?  What's the best way to cook beets?
“The New Southern Garden Cookbook” by Sheri Castle may feature mostly regional foods but you just might want to give the crispy Zucchini and Potato Skillet Cakes with tomato jam a try.

If you didn’t grow your own this year, after perusing the gorgeous “The Heirloom Tomato: From Garden to Table”,  by Amy Goldman
you might want to plan on doing so next year.

More books are on display to inspire your meal planning.
